The Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm.) is a two-year programme approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) that provides foundational professional training in pharmaceutical sciences, drug dispensing, community pharmacy practice, and regulatory compliance. It is the entry-level credential for registration as a pharmacist under the Pharmacy Act, 1948, enabling graduates to work legally in pharmacy retail, hospital dispensing, and pharmaceutical distribution. Students are trained in pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, biochemistry, clinical pharmacy, hospital and community pharmacy practice, and drug store management, with practical laboratory training and placements providing direct exposure to medication dispensing, patient counselling, and supply chain management.

As India’s healthcare system expands — driven by increasing insurance coverage, public health programme delivery, and the growth of the pharmaceutical retail market — trained pharmacists at every level of the healthcare pyramid are essential. The D.Pharm. produces registered pharmacists who serve as critical intermediaries between physicians, medicines, and patients in primary healthcare settings. Graduates may work as retail pharmacists, hospital dispensing pharmacists, and medical representatives, with career advancement supported by lateral entry into B.Pharm. programmes or further training in clinical pharmacy.
